1992-11-30 | Reba | Pittsburgh, PA | 11:26 | Strong Page and a percussive bent highlight the composed section. Trey scratches the band into the jam and fires off a series of singular, laser-like notes, before the playing settles into an unusual and delicate passage, both incredibly musical and wonderfully subdued. Fish permits the playing to go and go, which results in a soaring conclusion. (No whistling for the first time since "Reba's" debut.) |
1992-11-30 | Runaway Jim | Pittsburgh, PA | 9:29 | > from "Buried Alive", this deep, throbbing version sees the band shrugging their youthful exuberance, the musicians coalescing to concentrate upon an excellent, protracted jam which sounds a couple years before its time. |
1993-07-18 | Antelope | Pittsburgh, PA | 14:51 | Begins with a jam on "Heartbreaker" right off the bat, followed by a rocking, exploratory jam. The band then plays along with nearby fireworks which sounds similar to a "BBJ." Finally, they start into "Brother" but shift back to finish "Antelope." |
1995-11-24 | Reba | Pittsburgh, PA | 14:22 | > in from "Theme," more tight playing in the composed section gives way to really cool Mike, soon joined by Trey (who runs through a great set of chords), and this colored by incredible, off-beat Fish. Page offers a pretty splash of sound before Trey enters a truly melodic solo, Mike matching him note for note. Awesome and truly attentive full-band play informs great improvisational jamming which concludes in predictably great fashion. |
1995-11-24 | SOAMule | Pittsburgh, PA | 12:44 | Typically strong Page solo followed by Trey on vocals and guitar. This one gets crazy as it picks up tempo and pitch. Another Page solo, klezmer, bizarre chanting from Mike, and ending. |
1995-11-24 | Gin | Pittsburgh, PA | 13:05 | Improvisational version includes a great breakdown jam led by Fish, Page and Mike with Trey on the mini percussion kit. |
1996-10-18 | Maze | Pittsburgh, PA | 11:57 | Words do not adequately describe how demented, sick, insane, twisted, tension-filled, and incredibly dissonant this version is. It's a fantastic masterpiece! Go hear it Now! (get the sbd download from the SPAC FTA release on the "spreadsheet"). |
1996-10-18 | YEM | Pittsburgh, PA | 20:48 | Teases of Peter Frampton's 'Do You Feel Like We Do' during an elongated jam segment with a soaring peak. |
1996-10-18 | Reba | Pittsburgh, PA | 14:10 | Fall 1996 is notable for any number of reasons, not the least of which is the treatment "Reba" receives. Here is a case in point, with the band exiting the composed section to work through a terrific passage of extended, improvisational calm. Of course Trey is great, but Page's playing is particularly on-point, his work on the baby grand inspired and assured, through a conclusion both frenetic and wholly controlled. |
2017-07-19 | Caspian | Pittsburgh, PA | 15:26 | Inspired full-band play departs "Caspian" proper around the 5:00 mark. Trey shapes his tone, and his impassioned and varied soloing arrives as if from some astral plane. The jam then cools to float upon an atmospheric, yet highly musical wave, whose "No Quarter" undertones give way to trilling which slowly builds to the first of several very powerful peaks. |
2017-07-19 | Mr. Completely | Pittsburgh, PA | 21:19 | Busted out after a 380 show absence, Phish goes 2 for 2 on delivering the goods with this TAB standby. The jam quickly goes "Type II" and features bliss jamming aplenty as well as some new synth sounds from Page. |
2017-07-19 | BDTNL | Pittsburgh, PA | 9:36 | With Trey's struck notes skipping like stones atop bedrock Fish, a change leads to more by way of melodic soloing which, effortlessly, Trey whips into a blast of huge, clock-watcher sustain, play which separates this version from most others (see 10/20/21 for similar, inspired, jamming). |
2019-12-04 | Halley's | Pittsburgh, PA | 10:56 | Punchy, "Tube"/"Jibboo"-esque funky groove, with Trey melodically soloing o'er top it for a spell, eventually but abruptly modulates key and diminishes into "Circus." |
2019-12-04 | Runaway Jim | Pittsburgh, PA | 13:34 | Patient and smooth, all four musicians contribute to a cerebral and stately version. Mellow, yet highly musical, play features superb improvisation atop Fish's shuffling beat, with ideas swapped and recycled through subdued play (listen for a lot of "lead" Mike) which considerably brightens as Trey fires a number of notes (inducing a great reaction from the audience), before heavy, almost ominous play, morphs to become highly psychedelic in nature. This, slowly then, > into "Ghosts of the Forest" poignant Phish debut. |
